Gayme Time

What is Team Cleveland?
I am sure some of you have seen this name showing up around town for the past year and wondered just what it was all about. It's about you and me, about Cleveland, and about being gay and proud ... Team Cleveland is an umbrella organization designed to foster the growth of gay sports in our area while providing an ave-

Billy's on Clifton 11100 Clifton Blvd. by Maria Walsh
Hmmmm... There is a "new place on the block," folks, a fine addition to our growing number of lesbian-gay establishments. Remember “Scoops and Ladles”? Well, it is no more, for new owner Bill Slaiman has transformed 11100 Clifton Blvd. into "Billy's On Clifton,” a charming art deco style cafe which could become "the" premier gay eatery in Cleveland.
One sentence sums up my impression of Billy's on Clifton: "It's the little things that count." Little things like "made to order" items, fresh garlic, lemon in the ice water, real butter, vegetables not overcooked, cinnemon-honey dressing on the fruit salad-I could go on.
The first time I went to Billy's was on July 3, where a party was held at the restaurant, giving patrons an opportunity to sample some of Billy's great pasta entrees, salads, and dessert, compliments of the house. The food was excellent very light, not over-salted, or fatted, but what impressed me the most was the presence of
Bill Slaiman's mother. She was circulating the restaurant, playing hostess, hearing hugging people she knew, and the hands of those she had just met. I later discovered that she handles the "business" end of the business, while her son oversees the crea-
Monotones' hayride comes early this year
by Kevin J. Kukoleck
The Fifth Annual Gay and Lesbian Community Hayride will be early. Traditionally the hayride has had a Halloween theme, but because of scheduling conflicts this year, it will be held in September-on Friday the 13th. The evening will begin at 7:00 pm at Boyert's Farm in Medina.
This hayride has been sponsored by Monotones for the last five years. Monotones is a social group for gay and lesbian monogamous couples who live in Northeast Ohio. The hayride is open to everyone in the community, both couples and singles.
The DJ this year will be D. D. Fox. Ms. Fox is program manager for an Ashtabula radio station and has a wide variety of musical selections. Periodically through-
nue for a major participation in the Gay Games by citizens of the lesbian and gay community. The next Games are in New York City in August of 1994 and we can and should be there.
This effort was born in the summer of 1990 in Vancouver, B.C. at the last Gay Games. That event was a major success due to the participation of over 7,000 athletes from 30 countries around the world as well as over 15,000 spectators. And what a spectacle it was. There was competition in
tive decisions.
On my second visit to Billy's, three friends and I dined there around 6:30 on a Saturday night. We received prompt and friendly service, and had a difficult time choosing among the many appetizers, entrees, and salads. I finally chose one of the two specials that evening: glazed Cornish hen stuffed with rice served with crunchy steamed carrots, and fruit salad served in half of a scalloped orange covered with the aforementioned cinnemon-honey dressing. The dinner came with a salad, (excellent bleu cheese dressing), and a warm croissant. (I'm not sure of the exact price because my date picked up the tab.)
As for my companions, they each had one of Billy's popular, light pasta entrees, each served with garlic toast, and, again, "made-to-order." The cost of those entrees were about $7.00. The menu in general is moderately priced, and light in nature, specializing in burgers, pastas, salads, new desserts, and great specialty beverages
The decor is pleasing, with light gray ceiling fans. The restaurant is open seven walls, new carpeting, a glass block bar, and days a week from 8:00 a.m. to midnight,
serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. (Brunch specials on Sundays.)
I bet many of you have dreamed of owning your own gay bar, restaurant,
bookstore etc. Bill Slaiman has realized his dream, let's help him keep it alive. ▼
out the evening, the Cleveland City Country Dancers will be teaching simple square dances and show how the pros do it by giving a few of demonstrations. Square and contemporary dancing will continue throughout the evening. Or if you prefer a quiet, relaxing night or creating your own music, camp fires will be available for your enjoyment.
Free cider, coffee and donuts are included in the ticket price. If you don't like coffee or cider, bring whatever you want to drink with you, including alcohol if you wish. Because many people requested "real food" last year, this year's hayride will be catered with homemade brisket of beef and honey roasted chicken sandwiches, as well as a side dish and chocolate chunk brownies for a nominal additional charge.
As always, shopping will be available at the Boyert's gift shop which has a beautiful and very inexpensive selection of house plants as well as arts and crafts, gift baskets, dry flowers and much more.
Creative photo mementos will be available for purchase from the Monotones.

29 different sports as well as numerous cultural events.
Yes, Cleveland was there. Five local athletes flew to beautiful Vancouver for the event and performed admirably by doing their personal best. Several medals returned to the city of Cleveland around the necks of those proud performers.
The Gay Games were founded by the late Tom Waddell in 1982. It is through his philosophy of inclusion rather than exclusion that has allowed the Games to flourish. The Gay Games Federation strives to provide an atmosphere where anybody, gay or straight, competitive or recreational, can come together and participate. Although participation is the key element, competition is expected and anticipated.
It was a most wonderful feeling to witness the nine days of love, friendship, growth and competition in Vancouver. A feeling that all of my gay and lesbian brothers and sisters should have the opportunity to share. That opportunity is presenting itself in three short years in our huge neighbor to the east. I am sure New York will do an outstanding job for Gay Games IV. It is up to us to provide them with the stellar athletes we cultivate here in the Cleveland area.
Team Cleveland will provide the "clearing house" for Games information and host events designed to raise money for expenses incurred by members of the different athletic and cultural teams we plan to send to New York. The number of athletes participating is up to you. We were repre-
